Around six months back, Danish parliament voted unanimously in favor of a energy policy agreement for the coming decade. But the the country's largest opposition party, the Social Democratic Party, now says the agreement lacks adequate ambition regarding offshore wind and proposes that the energy policy's three 800 MW facilities be joined by two more of the same rating, says Social Democratic party leader Mette Frederiksen in the Danish daily Information.

"If we are going keep pace, we will have to have more renewable energy than the volume we were able to agree upon with the government last summer. The need for more wind energy up to 2030 is greater," Frederiksen says, referencing, among other things, new data centers, which domestic engineering consultancy Cowi estimates will increase the country's electricity consumption by around 20 percent by the end of the coming decade.

The party's proposal follows only two weeks after the outline of the policy's first tender was made public, and this will need to be finalized before the next general election set to take place within the coming 100 days. The social democrats aim to cover the whole of Danish power requirements from renewables in 2030, which is also the current policy's existing target.

The energy policy stipulates that the first offshore wind tender must be be complete in 2021 and commissioned in 2024. The following two tenders must then be completed in 2023 and 2025. Timeline details for holding two additional tenders and adding 4 GW ahead to 2030 are, however, not specified.

Quite unsurprisingly, Danish Wind Industry Association Head of Policy Morten Risum Bøndergaard hails the proposal as "pleasing and visionary".

"If Denmark is going to hit its climate target, we'ill need more green energy. The Danish wind industry will need political support to maintain its leading position in the sector. In this regard, it is important that the all of Denmark's wind resources are utilized in the best possible way. Offshore wind is a very important tool that provides cheap and safe renewable energy," Bøndergaard says.

All other opposition parties support the social democrats proposal as does one party in the governing coalition, the Conservative Party. 

Conservative party MP Mette Abildgaard tells the media that "further wind farms before 2030 most certainly sound interesting", although indicates that social democrats did not present any financial plan, which Frederiksen forecasts would primarily consist of grid connection costs.
