Siemens Gamesa receives major order in US
French EDF has awarded a, in several senses, large order to Siemens Gamesa. The wind turbine manufacturer will supply equipment to two US onshore wind projects, Coyote in Texas at 241 MW, and the 246 MW Oso Grande project in New Mexico,. These projects are expected to become operational by the summer and late 2019, respectively, Siemens Gamesa informs in a statement.
Besides the order of 487 MW being nominally large for Siemens Gamesa, which in recent years has had difficulties on the US market, the selected turbine itself is also larger than normal. The French project developer has thus opted for 96 wind turbines of the type SG 4.5-145 for the wind farms. Moreover, 24 smaller turbines of the type SWT-2.3-108 have been chosen.
The reason for including smaller turbines in the mix is the US subsidy scheme, more specifically, the safe harbor arrangement. By all accounts, the projects began in 2016, when EDF by being part of the investment was able to secure the full benefits of the PTC arrangement, as long as the projects enter operation before the end of 2020. And in 2016, 4.5 MW turbines were not part of Siemens' portfolio.
