22 offshore wind turbines and two milestone achievements are being celebrated today, as Ørsted and partners inaugurate the 128 MW offshore wind facility, Formosa 1, off the coast of Taiwan's Mialoi province.

The wind farm consists of two Siemens Gamesa turbines with per unit ratings of 4 MW, installed in October 2016, as well as an additional 20 6MW machines made by the same OEM, erected this month.

The two milestones entail Formosa 1 being the first of its kind in Taiwan and Ørsted's first development in Asia.

"Ørsted built the world's first offshore wind farm in Denmark more than 28 years ago. Since then, Ørsted has installed more than 25 offshore wind farms. We are proud of being able to inaugurate the first commercial-scale offshore wind farm in Taiwan and in the Asia-Pacific region," writes Ørsted Chief Executive, Offshore, Martin Neubert in a statement.

Big wind farms in the pipeline

If all goes according to plan, Formosa 1 will only be Ørsted's first step in Taiwan, however. The installation of the 900 MW Greater Changhua 1 & 2a project, expected to enter operation in 2022, is currently underway.

Moreover, Ørsted had won a further allocation of 920 MW in connection with Greater Changhua 2b & 4, forecast for completion in 2025 – insofar as a final investment decision is made. Altogether, Taiwan counts on having 5.7 GW in offshore wind capacity installed before the end of 2025.

The Danish energy company owns 35 percent of the facility, while JERA, Macquarie Capital and Swancor hold stakes of 32.5 percent, 25 percent and 7.5 percent, respectively. Formosa 2's commissioning is planned for late 2021.
