Ørsted, Siemens Gamesa selects UK as H2 project site

Project Oyster, to consist of a combined wind turbine and electrolysis system designed for offshore operation, will be located in Grimsby, England.

Ørsted and Siemens Gamesa have for some time now been mulling over joint plans to establish hydrogen production at sea using wind energy. Now the project's location has been decided, the choice falling on Grimsby on the eastern English coast.

The consortium, dubbed Oyster and consisting of Ørsted, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, ITM Power and Element Energy, will in a pilot project develop and test a megawatt-class electrolyzer that can be operated in a marine environment. In addition, the parties mean to examine the possibility and potential of combining an offshore wind turbine directly with an electrolyzer and transport renewable hydrogen to shore.
