State of Maryland looks for additional 6.9GW OSW
Governor of Maryland Wes Moore looks to move the US state to the top of the class within offshore wind, saying that he supports quintupling the state’s offshore wind goals from 1.6GW to 8.5GW by 2031, writes Recharge News.
The plan presupposes, however, that the federal authorities make new lease areas available along the coastline.
”Maryland is on track to be the offshore wind capital of America and that work is happening right here,” said Wes Moore in an address in Baltimore.
Maryland aims for total energy self-sufficiency and complete climate neutrality by 2031.
Former Republican governor Larry Hogan commissioned two offshore wind project for each 800MW with Ørsted selected to run point on one of them. An additional 400MW tender was signed off on.
California currently holds the ranks as the most ambitious offshore wind developer with its plan to install 25GW floating capacity by 2045, while New Jersey and New York aim for 11GW and 9GW, respectively.
