The UN's International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) is hosting a conference in Mexico to discuss alternative fuels. The event has prompted 96 environmental groups from around the world to sign an open letter in which they condemn a potential large-scale use of biofuels for aviation.
ICAO has proposed that the aviation industry should use 5 million tons of biofuels per year from 2025. This consumption, however, will increase considerably in the following years and reach 128 million tons a year in 2040, while the number will hit 285 million tons in 2050. According to the letter, this amount would correspond to three times as much as is used across the entire transportation sector today.
