Heavy increase in used wind turbine blades – difficult to recycle

The amount of spent wind turbine blades has risen almost exponentially in recent years, but they aren't designed for current recycling requirements, making them hard to reutilize. That's why manufacturers are now focusing on designing recyclable turbine blades.

The wind industry's spent blades will count about 10 percent of total composite materials in Europe by the mid-2020s, corresponding to 70,000 tons. That's 102,000 tons on a global scale. The sector thus has a growing waste problem on its hands, writes interest group Wind Denmark (Danish).
