Fortum aims to use CO2 for recycled plastics rather than sustainable fuels

The Finnish utility targets half a million tonnes of CO2 from two waste disposal facilities by 2030. The uses of CO2 in the short term are still unclear, but the group has a clear ambition: To create new materials on a molecular level.

For Finnish utility Fortum and Danish district heating utility Fjernvarme Fyn, developing sustainable fuels is just one aspect of the large-scale plans to capture half a million tonnes of CO2 from two waste disposal facilities on the island of Funen by 2030.

In the long term, the captured CO2 will become far more valuable as an ingredient in new forms of materials like plastics, says Kalle Saarimaa, vice president, Business Area Recycling & Waste, at Fortum.

By producing hydrogen directly from turbines, the utility wants to reduce energy loss and save money. The company has just received state subsidies to develop the first turbine of this kind in the UK, providing a much more efficient solution than other alternatives, says CEO Anna Borg.
