Norway seems to be well on the way to achieving the country’s ambition of banning all sales of gasoline and diesel cars no later than 2025.
As evident from Monday data on newly registered cars in the country, four out of five new cars sold in Norway during 2022 were electric vehicles.
The precise number is 79.3%, up from 65% in 2021. Ten years back, the share was at 2.9%.
For the second consecutive year, electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla was the brand selling the highest number of new cars in the Norwegian market, representing 12.2% of new car sales.
Volkswagen came in second with a market share of 11.6%.
The most popular car model in Norway last year was Tesla Model Y, with the second and third spot held by Volkswagen ID. 4 and Skoda Enyaq, respectively.
On Dec. 27, Norwegian news agency NTB reported that 16,839 new Tesla Model Ys had been registered throughout 2022.
The model thereby broke an old Norwegian record of the highest number of registrations in one year for one type of car model, previously belonging to the popular Volkswagen Beetle, which saw 16,706 new registrations in 1969.
In Denmark, the numbers for electric vehicles look very different, with 20.8% of new sold cars being electric, up from 12.9%.
The biggest seller among electric cars in Denmark was Skoda Enyaq, listed as number nine over the most sold cars with 2,431 registrations.
Peugeot 208 was the primary seller overall with 3,918 registrations.
Last year, the total number of electric vehicles in Denmark surpassed 100,000.
