Secret recordings reveal deceitful US oil lobby

Players in the US fossil energy sector provided misinformation last year in saying they had a handle on methane emissions from, for instance, flaring, reports The New York Times.
Flaring is the intensional burning of surplus natural gas – often used for safety reasons on, for instance, oil and gas platforms. The practice emits large volume of the potent greenhouse gas methane into the atmosphere and which contributes to melting polar ice. | Photo: ANGUS MORDANT/REUTERS / X06552

While lobbyists in the US have spent recent years resisting domestic legislation to limit natural gas leaks by arguing that methane emissions are under control, representatives from the same groups have made conflicting statements off the record, reveal confidential recordings reviewed by the media.
