At both an ordinary and extraordinary general meeting held today, Friday, one of the world's largest oil companies has now decided to change its name from Total to Total Energies.

This rebrand is taking place to signal that the French group wishes to henceforth be known for its efforts in areas such as solar and wind power rather than mainly be associated to its core business within oil and gas.

The decision passed "almost unanimously" among shareholders, the company informs in a statement.

In connection with the name change, Total Energies will also get a new visual identity, reads the media release.

"Energy is life. We all need it and it’s a source of progress. So today, to contribute to the sustainable development of the planet facing the climate challenge, we are moving forward, together, towards new energies. Energy is reinventing itself, and this energy journey is ours. Our ambition is to be a world-class player in the energy transition. That is why Total is transforming and becoming TotalEnergies," writes Total Energies Chair and Chief Executive Patrick Pouyanné.

The proposal to rename the company was suggested in connection with the presentation of the group's annual financial statement on Feb. 9, 2021.
