Denmark must become independent of Russian gas, says Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen during a press conference Sunday regarding a national compromise on Danish security policy.

The government has made a deal with both support and opposition parties on strengthening Danish defense.

"It has been said before that energy policy isn't just energy policy. It's very much also security policy. As a result, we have decided that Denmark must become independent of Russian gas. And we will work for Denmark to reach the same decision," says Frederiksen at the press conference.

The decision comes in the wake of Russia's recent invasion of Ukraine.

The invasion has sparked condemnation from around many parts of the world and led European nations - including Denmark - to reconsider their energy policy and dependence on Russian gas.

However, Frederiksen hasn't revealed a timeline for when Denmark will stop importing gas from Russia.

"It must happen as soon as possible," she says.

She also underlines that Denmark will work towards imposing sanctions against Russia – including a stop to gas imports – in conjunction with the EU.

"We agree in the EU on teaming up on sanctions, and I would strongly recommend that we keep this up," the Danish Prime Minister says.

Several Danish parties have pushed for a stop to Russian gas imports. Utility Ørsted currently has a contract with state-owned Russian gas giant Gazprom for offtake of gas running until 2030.

Frederiksen makes no comment on whether this contract must be annulled.

On top of becoming independent on Russian gas, Denmark will increase defense spending to two percent of the gross domestic product.

The parties also agree on abolishing Denmark's EU defense opt-out, which will be put to the vote on June 1, 2022.
