If the plan is implemented, the EU will be able to reduce consumption of Russian gas by 80 percent this year already.

The European Commission is busy drawing up a plan for reducing dependence on Russian gas by upwards of 80 percent – as early as this year, reports Bloomberg News citing two unnamed sources.

The plan, expected to be presented Tuesday, will include finding other supply routes and increasing energy efficiency, among other elements. The ultimate goal is to reach full independence from fossil fuels ex-Russia by 2030, which would be ahead of schedule.

The extensive revising of EU's energy strategy comes after Russia's invasion of Ukraine the week before last.

In the aftermath, Western allies led by the US and the EU have imposed sweeping economic and financial sanctions against Russia. Similarly, several nations such as Germany and Denmark have announced defense budget increases.

However, one hurdle in the Western response is that the EU is particularly reliant on Russian oil and gas and therefore pours money into straight into the Russian state treasury every day in spite of the sanctions.
