TotalEnergies and Eni’s 50-50 joint venture reports a discovery estimated to contain roughly 2.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
The find, drilled at the Cronos-1 prospect, is located offshore of Cyprus 2.2km below sea level in the Block 6 area 160km off the mainland coast.
TotalEnergies and Eni say preliminary estimates show presence of ”significant additions upside” in the area.
”This successful exploration well at Cronos-1 is another illustration of the impact of our exploration strategy which is focused on discovering resources with low technical cost and low carbon emissions,” says Kevin McLachlan, senior vice president for exploration at TotalEnergies, in a statement.
The discovery is the second of its kind within Block 6. The first stems from 2018 and was drilled at the Calypso 1 prospect.
TotalEnergies and Eni have already planned another drilling in the vicinity.
Eni holds operator status for the license.
