(Updated with news of Nord Stream 1 gas leaks)

The day after reports of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline leaking gas, the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities confirms that the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline has now also sprung leaks.

Two leaks have reportedly occurred, one detected northeast of the island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea.

”The incident has occurred in international waters and will be secured like the Nord Stream 2 leak,” the ministry reports and adds that the incidents ”will have no consequences for the security of Danish gas supply.”

Monday evening, Danish authorities reported a gas leak southeast of Bornholm, with the Danish Maritime has issued a navigational warning, adding that the leak is dangerous to naval traffic.

The leak occurred along the route of the major gas pipeline Nord Stream 1.

Reports of the leak came shortly after observing a drop in pressure in the pipeline. Pressured allegedly dropped from approx. 105 bar to 7 bar, writes news agency Reuters.

In a press release, the Danish Energy Agency (DEA) confirms that one of the two Nord Stream 2 pipelines has sprung in a leak in Danish territory.

Sailing is prohibited within five nautical miles of the leak site, the DMA informs.

”There are no security risks related to the leak outside of the prohibitive zone. The incident is not expected to have consequences for the security of Danish gas supply,” writes the DEA in a press release.

Furthermore, the agency notes that relevant authorities are coordinating the response efforts and that the agency will send out updates on a continuous basis.

Nord Stream 2 connects Russia and Germany.

The pipeline came close to being commissioned and filled up with 300 million cubic meters of gas when German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced shortly prior to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine that this plan would be scrapped.

Danish daily Jyllands-Posten informs Monday evening that F-16 fighters were scrambled to take photographs of the areas south-east of Bornholm.

The Danish Defence Command confirms as much to the media, stating that they observe seething in the area, according to Jyllands-Posten.
