Ukraine accused of attacking Europe's largest nuclear power plant
A part of the Zaporizhzhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine was subjected to some kind of blast on Thursday morning.
This was reported by the Russian-controlled administration at the Zaporizhzhia plant, according to the Reuters news agency.
The plant’s Russian administrators say that an ”explosive device” was thrown into an area with diesel tanks, they write in a statement.
According to Reuters, they accuse Ukraine of being behind the attack.
It is not clear when the attack was allegedly committed.
Reuters has not been able to confirm or deny the information.
The Zaporizhzhia plant is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. It is located in southeastern Ukraine and was captured by Russian forces during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Some Ukrainian employees still work at the plant, but it is controlled by Russians.
The plant is not in operation. All six reactors at the power plant are in a so-called ”shutdown mode”, but electricity and water are still needed to cool the reactors.
There have been several power outages at the nuclear power plant, which has caused fears for the safety of the plant.
Ukraine and Russia have repeatedly accused each other of being behind attacks that have hit power lines and disrupted the supply of electricity to the nuclear plant.
Earlier in March, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) warned Russia against resuming operations at the Zaporizhzhia plant.
During the war, there have been ongoing concerns about the safety of the plant. Not least because there have been several battles in the plant’s vicinity.
Zaporizhzhia normally accounts for a fifth of Ukraine’s annual electricity production. Before the invasion, it employed around 11,000 people.
