New buildings directive: "We have broken through a barrier"

In December, Danish MEP Bendt Bendtsen helped settle the EU's new buildings directive, and while the directive was not as tightly regulated as the EU Parliament would have wished, he is satisfied with the result. The process of making European buildings more energy efficient is now being launched and this will create a natural snowball effect, says Bendtsen.

BRUSSELS

From 2020, all new buildings in the EU must be "almost energy neutral" and the existing buildings must also be energy renovated so that they are "almost energy neutral" by 2050.
