US President Joe Biden will bid Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy welcome to Washington D.C. on Wednesday, the White House informs in a statement Sunday.

The visit is seen as confirming the two countries' relationship.

"This visit will affirm the United States’ unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russia’s ongoing aggression," a White House statement said.

Ukraine and Russia have been in conflict since the latter annexed the former's Crimean peninsula territory in 2014.

During the meeting, the two heads of state will also address the controversial natural gas pipeline Nord Stream 2.

The US struck an agreement with Berlin in July, ending a long dispute over the pipeline supplying Germany with natural gas from Russia.

That agreement entails Germany committing itself to green technology investments in Ukraine. For its part, the US will halt its attempts to thwart the project.

Ukraine has been concerned both that Russia could use the pipeline for political leverage and that the former might lose income due to the coming gas transit route circumventing Ukraine.

At a meeting on Aug. 22, German Chancellor Angela Merkel assured Zelensky that Nord Stream 2 will not be used as "a geopolitical weapon".

According to several sources with knowledge of the matter, Germany has vowed to take action if Russia cuts Ukraine's supply.

Biden and Zelenskiy spoke in June ahead of the US president's summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin held in Geneva, Switzerland.

At the time, the conflict with Russia was also on the agenda.

Since then, the two nations have maintained diplomatic relations.
