EU member nations have agreed on phasing out Russian gas imports ”as quickly as possible” during a summit in France.

The statement comes from Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen immediately following the conclusion of the meeting, which took place at the Chateau de Versailles near Paris.

Before the meeting, there were talks about setting an end date for the EU’s gas imports from Russia.

However, the nations failed to reach an agreement on this. Countries including Germany and Italy currently rely heavily on Russian gas.

The issue of Russian gas has come to the fore in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in late February.

As a result of the invasion, EU nations have imposed tough sanctions on Russia, which were later intensified.
