The EU and the US have signed a deal on additional deliveries of liquefied natural gas in an effort to minimize dependence on Russian gas, which accounts for approximately 40 percent of the EU’s natural gas imports.

According to Bloomberg News, the US will supply at least 15 billion m3 of liquefied natural gas in 2022.

After Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the EU has been busy trying to find alternative sources, which would lessen dependence on Russian natural gas.

It is against this backdrop that Friday’s pact between the EU and the US has emerged.

Biden and von der Leyen have also agreed on a plan for LNG deliveries from the US towards 2030. The deliveries of natural gas will gradually grow to 50 billion m3.

”Today we’ve agreed on a joint game plan toward that goal while accelerating our progress toward a secure clean energy future,” says Biden:

”This initiative focuses on two core issues, one helping Europe to reduce its dependency on Russian gas as quickly as possible and secondly, reducing Europe’s demand for gas overall.”

Only new energy sources, including LNG, will in this context be the way forward, according to von der Leyen:

”We as Europeans want to diversify away from Russia towards suppliers that we trust, that are our friends, that are reliable,” the commission president states.

This entails less gas from Russia and more energy suppliers to the EU.

The US president has visited Brussels Thursday and Friday to attend meetings in NATO, G7 and the EU with the aim of taking a united Western stand against Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Friday, he will travel to Poland where he will stop off in a town close to the Ukrainian borders.
