For the moment, costs of electricity and natural gas in Europe are closely intertwined being that rules require zonal prices be set by the source generating the most expensive kWh.

However, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says the price model must be altered so the cost of gas-fired power stops benchmarking electricity spun from other sources, not least renewables, reports Danish media Berlingske.

No concrete and detailed plan for implementing the change has yet been presented.

Nevertheless, Professor Marie Münster, specializing in energy systems analysis from the Technical University of Denmark, tells the media that making changes to the basic market construction should be approached with caution.

”As soon as we start to tinker with the these market instruments, we risk distortions emerging. This could, for instance, be a lack of incentive to make new investments, and then the long-term price would not be reduced,” the newspaper cites her saying.
