EU exploring options to exit contentious energy treaty

Serious dissatisfaction is emanating from European capitals regarding the Energy Charter Treaty for protecting fossil energy investments, thus prompting the EU Commission to assess its options for a collective exit.

The EU Commission is in the process of investigating possibilities for the union’s member states to collectively exit the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), a multilateral framework providing protections such as international arbitration for energy investments, albeit mainly the fossil variety.
