Denmark has taken on a role as key advisor in connection with the G20 summit set to kick off in New Delhi in September.

Specifically, Denmark has been invited to assist the G20 Climate and Environment Working Group, set to meet up at regular intervals between now and the opening of the summit.

The goal is to come up with concrete recommendations which can be discussed at the summit.

”If we can provide some recommendations leading to decisions from major economies with extensive emissions, then this will be a way for Denmark to gain influence on matters we usually have no say on,” says Minister for Development Cooperation and Global Climate Policy Dan Jørgensen.

Jørgensen is currently touring India where he has met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Climate Minister Bhupender Yadav and also held talks with Chief Coordinator for India’s G20 Presidency Harsh Vardhan Shringla.

”We hope it translates into concrete action as in bringing about decisions that could potentially be influenced by Denmark,” says Jørgensen.

He explains that such could pertain to renewable energy, energy efficiency measures and potential phase-out of fossil fuels and transition to renewable alternatives.

Whether such a role proves a success for Denmark will be revealed when G20 nations convene in September, the minister says.
