Global energy-related emissions climbed to record levels in 2022, says the International Energy Agency on Thursday.

However, clean technology like solar power and electric vehicles did help limit increased coal and oil use.

There is a need to curb fossil fuel emissions substantially if aims of preventing global rise in temperatures and climate changes are to be met, scientists maintain.

”We still see emissions growing from fossil fuels, hindering efforts to meet the world’s climate targets,” IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol says in a release alongside the report.

The report from the watchdog comes only a few weeks after fossil fuel producers like Chevron, Exxon Mobil and Shell all announced record-breaking profits in 2022.

Global energy emissions went up 0.9% in 2022 to an unprecedented 36.8 billion tonnes, IEA report shows.
