China still has hopes that the UN will launch an investigation into the Nord Stream pipeline explosions, says a spokesperson from the Chinese foreign ministry on Wednesday, according to news outlet Reuters.

Three out of four Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines were bombed back in September.

On September 27, the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that Danish authorities estimated that the explosions were a result of deliberate actions.

It is still unsolved who was behind the explosions.

Last week, Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said that Denmark had been made aware that an object had been discovered in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. This finding was supposedly retrieved at one of the pipelines that hadn’t blown up.

Russian pipeline owner Gazprom confirmed the finding to Danish authorities.

Løkke Rasmussen did not clarify what type of object had been found.

Subsequently, Russia has demanded access to the Danish investigation of the explosions which did not occur in Danish waters, but in the so-called exclusive economic zone, which entails that Denmark has the legal right to probe the seabed.

According to Løkke Rasmussen, Denmark has denied Russia’s demand.

Previously, China called for an UN-led investigation, and the country sticks to that claim following Kremlin’s demand.
