The Danish Foreign Ministry has gotten involved in a case between Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas and the Finnish utility Fortum, reports Danish broadcaster DR.
The case revolves around four individual onshore wind farms, which Vestas had been tapped to install on behest of Fortum.
Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Vestas has pulled out of the Russian market. Additionally, Vestas maintains that EU sanctions means that the terms of the agreement between Vestas and Fortum were untenable.
The two parties have ended up in arbitration, which could set back Vestas DKK 1.5bn (EUR 200m).
The Danish Foreign Ministry confirms acquaintance with the case to DR and says that it pursues talks with the Finns.
”At behest of Vestas, the Foreign Ministry has addressed the matter with Finnish authorities through all relevant channels. The ambassador has discussed the case on numerous occasions with top-level Finnish authorities. And the Danish foreign minister has addressed the case at a ministerial level. So far, the Finns have replied that they view the ordeal as a case between two companies and that the matter should be settled in accordance with the terms stipulated by the contract,” writes the Danish Foreign Ministry to DR.
The deal of the wind turbines was brokered between Vestas and state-owned Fortum back in September 2021. The war in Ukraine broke out in February 2022.
Fortum has waived commenting on the matter to DR, however, in a written reply, the company reveals that it disagrees with Vestas’ expounding of the case.
