One of the most infamous, controversial, and well-known power plants in the US will be shut down after 40 years of operations. The Three Mile Island plant, which suffered a partial meltdown in 1979, will be closed by the end of 2019 at the latest, informs the owner Exelon Corp.
Three Mile Island is located around 300 kilometers west of New York, employs approximately 675 people, and supplies power to almost 800,000 homes. Exelon Corp attributes the shutdown to the low price of natural gas, but it may have factored in that the power plant is one of the oldest in the US and likely faces large operational expenses.
