Siemens Gamesa is launching construction of an energy storage project in Hamburg. The wind turbine manufacturer will install the first full-scale version of its Future Energy System (FES) project, where rocks via steam turbines will store wind turbine electricity as energy. The project will involve approximately 1,000 tons of rock, which will deliver 30 MWh electricity at temperatures of 600 degrees Celsius, states the company.
The work of filling the many stones into a round bodied, ferroconcrete container of 800 square kilometers, which is also insulated, will begin in December and is expected to be finished in the spring 2019. The project is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, while a partnership deal has been signed with local utility Hamburg Energie, which will investigate the concept's commercial possibilities.
