Norwegian state-owned utility Statkraft will develop an onshore wind farm on the Shetland Islands, according to local consortium Energy Isles.

Since 2014, Energy Isles has worked toward building a 200MW onshore wind farm on the island of Yell, located in the northern region of the Scottish archipelago.

Energy Isles says the wind farm will likely comprise 29 wind turbines and be operational in 2026, provided things go according to plan. The consortium is certain this will be the case with an experienced partner like Statkraft.

"Statkraft has a great reputation in the green energy sector across the world and has the financial capability to help us deliver the Energy Isles wind farm. They understand the work that has already gone into the project and have the expertise to help us take it to the next stage," says Energy Isles Director Derek Jamieson in a press statement.

Statkraft thinks the consortium has laid a solid foundation for the utility to build upon.

"We are delighted to come to an agreement with Energy Isles and this fits perfectly with our onshore wind power strategy," says Statkraft UK Managing Director David Flood.

Energy Isles consists of 50 local businesspeople and companies spanning everything from communication firms to bar owners and mussel farmers, as well as Energy Isles Danmark.
