An order from Scottish utility SSE Renewables sets a new record for Vestas' order intake.
The contract in question is the largest single order Vestas has ever received for a wind project in Europe.
103 wind turbines with a combined capacity of 443 MW will be deployed at the Viking project on the UK's Shetland Islands in the North Atlantic.
"This contract represents another significant milestone for our Viking project. We are delighted to be working with Vestas again with whom we have a significant track record of project delivery," writes Paul Cooley, director of Capital Projects at SSE Renewables, in a press statement.
"Viking will be the largest onshore wind farm in the UK by output and will bring significant economic opportunities to Shetland and beyond," he adds.
The order entails wind turbines of the type V117-4.2 MW to be delivered in an optimized 4.3 MW version.
Furthermore, the contract includes delivery, installation, commissioning and, not least, a 30-year AOM 5000 service agreement.
"We are pleased to continue our cooperation with SSE Renewables, an excellent partnership that dates back 20 years. The Viking project creates a highly competitive business case for our customer and sends a strong signal for economic growth and green recovery in Shetland Islands, the UK and beyond," writes Vestas Northern & Central Europe President Nils de Baar in the media release.
The equipment is set for delivery in the first quarter of 2023 and will come online during the same period.
Due to the service deal's considerably long duration, Vestas is also now planning to establish a service organization on the Shetland Islands, the press statement informs.
