With funding from Norwegian state fund Enova, Yara has brought in German chemical group Linde for a hydrogen project close to Yara's energy-intensive ammonia production plant at Herøya in Porsgrunn where the company will replace natural gas with hydrogen in the long term.

The Herøya plant will have a capacity of 24MW and produce green hydrogen through electrolysis. The project has received NOK 283m (EUR 28.2m) through Enova and aims to prove that ammonia produced through renewable energy can lower emissions from fertilizer production.

"The project aims to supply the first green ammonia products to the market as early as mid-2023, both as fossil-free fertilizers, as well as emissions-free shipping fuel. Green ammonia is the key to reducing emissions from world food production and long-distance shipping. With this project, we move from intention to actions together with Linde Engineering and local contractors," says President of Yara Clean Ammonia Magnus Ankarstrand.

The facility will have an annual capacity of approximately 10,000 kg/day of hydrogen. It will replace ethane as raw material in production, thereby eliminating 41,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

Over the past year, Yara has made it a priority to lower emissions from its Herøya ammonia production. Together with Statkraft and Aker Clean Hydrogen, Yara has formed Hegra, which will electrify and decarbonize the Herøya production.
