The Dutch-British oil company has launched an ambitious plan for developing a total of six offshore wind farms off the coast of Brazil with a combined capacity of 17GW, writes Bloomberg News.

Shell filed an application to the Brazilian environmental authorities earlier this week, officializing the plan.

"This is the first step of a very long development process," says Shell's head of renewable energy generation in Brazil, Gabriela Olivera, to Bloomberg News.

With an aim to achieve net-zero emissions in 2050, Shell already has offshore wind projects totaling 6GW under development.

In Brazil, which has 21GW of wind power capacity, there are not yet any offshore wind projects in operation.
