German-Danish TSOs' collaboration on energy island takes step forward

The collaboration on interconnectors and electricity facilities that will fire up Energy Island Bornholm is moving forward, with Danish transmission system operator Energinet and German counterpart 50Hertz signing agreements on ownership and costs, writes the former in a press release.

Together, the two nations’ TSOs are busy figuring out the costs of setting up and operating the cables that will transmit power from the offshire wind farms to Germany and further across Denmark.

Moreover, Energinet is also busy determining where the substations and cables on land will be placed.

”Electrical installations and power cables make up the heart of the Energy Island Bornholm, ensuring that Bornholm becomes a hotspot for the buildout of green energy from offshore wind across the Baltic Sea,” says Vice President of Energy Islands at Energinet Hanne Storm Edlefsen.

The set-up of the interconnector between Bornholm and Germany will be set up and owned by 50Hertz, thus not figuring as an expense for Energinet.

Originally, Energy Island Bornholm was supposed to supply 2GW, but the target was expanded to 3GW. Per political agreements concerning the island, wind turbines will deliver first power by 2030.
