Copenhagen Infrastrucure Partners has won the right to develop a floating offshore win project in the Pacific off the coast of California with a potential capacity for 1GW, the company writes in a press release.

A total of five areas covering 150,000 hectares went under the hammer Tuesday and, through its fund CI IV and its affiliate California North Floating, LLC, the company was awarded lease area OCS-P 0562.

”The auction was the first-ever offshore wind lease sale on the US West Coast and the first-ever US sale to support potential commercial-scale floating offshore wind energy development. A total of five offshore wind energy leases off the central and northern California coast were auctioned off and the area won by CIP has a potential capacity of more than 1.0 GW,” CIP states in the press release.

The Danish company has not disclosed how much it paid for the rights, but the Californian authorities’ website reveals that the price amounted to USD 173.8m.

The sum marks the largest payment for any of the five sites, otherwise ranging between USD 130.0m and USD 157.7m each.
