Joint venture company Iberblue Wind launches two new projects of a combined 1.96GW in potential capacity.

The projects are the first cross-border offshore wind projects on the Spanish-Portuguese border.

The projects named Juan Sebastián and Creoula will have approximately 109 wind turbines and will occupy an area of 530 square kilometers off the coasts of Baixo Miño in Pontevedra and Viana do Castelo.

According to a press release, the global investment required for construction and maintenance of the two projects could exceed EUR 4bn.

”These projects represent a pioneering approach to offshore floating wind development that will bring important benefits for both countries. It is estimated that the cost of their joint development could be 32% lower than if they were to be developed separately. This will maximize synergies in resourcing and economies of scale during both the construction phase and operation phases,” the press release reads.

Irish Simply Blue Group and Spanish companies Proes Consultores, Grupo Amper and FF New Energy Ventures are behind the joint venture.

”It is very exciting to develop cross-border floating offshore wind projects and to collaborate with both Portuguese and Spanish governments on this positive opportunity for both countries,” says Iberblue Vice President Adrián de Andrés, adding:

”We have already engaged with both authorities when we presented our projects to the Spanish and Portuguese authorities, and we look forward to continued engagement.”

990MW

Towards the end of 2022, Iberblue announced a floating offshore wind farm in the Spanish region of Andalusia with a total capacity of 990MW.

Preliminary work is already underway preparing development of the facility, planned to deploy 55 floating wind turbines at a site of 310 km2.

“Andalusia is an area with great potential for development of floating offshore wind energy and with this wind project we want to contribute to the region’s positioning on the offshore wind sector,” wrote de Andrés in the media release.
