TotalEnergies launches its largest-ever battery facility in Belgium
TotalEnergies’ new Antwerp refinery will become their biggest ever battery storage project in Europe.
The battery storage plant has a power rating of 25MW and capacity of 75MWh — equivalent to the daily consumption of close to 10,000 households, writes the company in today’s press release.
TotalEnergies has previously launched a battery farm in France with a total 130MWh capacity. The new battery plant in Antwerp will consist of 40 Intensium Max High Energy lithium-ion containers and will thus be the biggest of its kind.
The battery farm will be operational by the end of 2024 and will help stabilizing the high-voltage transmission network across Europe.
This is important because of the intermittency that might occur in the power grid due to renewable energy not being as stable as fossil energy.
“This first storage project in Belgium – our largest in Europe – will help ensure the stability of the Belgian and European grids to allow for greater development of renewable energies. It fits in perfectly with the multi-energy strategy of TotalEnergies,” said Olivier Jouny, Senior Vice President Integrated Power at TotalEnergies, in the press release, adding:
”Backed by Saft’s battery energy storage system expertise, TotalEnergies intends to deploy storage solutions – notably in countries where we are actively developing renewable energies. With its energy storagesolutions, TotalEnergies supports the growth of renewable energy production in the European energy mix.”
