A working group on offshore renewable energy production under the Portuguese government has proposed the installation of up to 3.5 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity in an initial bidding phase, reports Bloomberg News, citing an emailed statement from the Portuguese Ministry of Environment.

This 3.5GW capacity would be set up in areas near Viana do Castelo, Leixoes and Figueira da Foz in northern Portugal, and would be awarded via one or more bidding rounds.

More capacity should be awarded in subsequent bidding rounds until 2030 to reach a total of 10GW of offshore wind capacity, according to the working group.
