Brazilian oil giant invests in wind turbine development
The Brazilian oil giant Petrobras wants to expand within renewable energy, and the group will even be involved in the production of wind turbines, thus competing with Danish Vestas.
Petrobras announces this in a press release:
”Petrobras informs that it has signed a strategic partnership with WEG, a global Brazilian electronics equipment company, for the joint development of a 7 megawatt (MW) onshore wind turbine, the first of this size to be manufactured in Brazil,” it reads.
”This project represents an important milestone for Petrobras, as it will increase its knowledge of wind energy technology, as well as helping to drive the energy transition in Brazil.”
According to the announcement, it is expected that WEG will be able to mass produce the planned onshore turbine from 2025.
Petrobras will invest BRL 130m (USD 26.4m) in the project.
In another announcement from Petrobras on Wednesday, it was also stated that the group has asked the Brazilian authorities for permission to study ten areas for possible offshore wind projects with a total potential capacity of 23 gigawatts (GW).
