Chinese manufacturer Dongfang has installed the first ever 18 MW offshore wind turbine, according to Recharge News.

The turbine has been installed in Guangdong province, has a diameter of 260 meters and is believed to be capable of producing 72 gigawatt hours per year.

Other Chinese manufacturers, including Mingyang, are also aiming to develop gigawatt turbines, while Europe and the US want to focus on 15 MW first to allow supply chains to keep up.

However, Vestas’ largest turbine, the V236 15MW, also has a diameter of 236 meters and can provide 80 gigawatt hours per year.
