German marine authorities have reserved sea areas with ample space to build the planned 40 gigawatt, GW, capacity by 2023, according to Recharge News.

In fact, the plan includes enough areas to develop offshore wind farms with a total capacity of 60 GW.

”The draft site development plan shows that offshore wind energy will continue to be an essential pillar in the transformation of the energy system in the long term,” German Minister for Climate and Energy Robert Habeck said in a statement.

”Through the plan, we are creating planning and investment security for all involved and making a contribution to the development of sustainable supply chains.”

The plan includes so-called ”acceleration areas” that are considered particularly suitable for offshore wind, with the possibility of installing 36 GW of capacity.

Germany aims to double offshore wind capacity between 2035 and 2045 to 70 GW.
