
For a long time, the simple explanation was that the V164 turbine from MHI Vestas was an 8 MW turbine. The detailed explanation is that the Japanese/Danish joint venture has often received orders for upgraded V164 turbines with increased capacity, such as for the extension farm in Walney, where turbines were boosted to 8.25 MW, or the Norther project, where 8.4 MW is the goal.
However, MHI Vestas is now making a clean cut. Thursday, Dec. 1 2016, a V164 turbine in the Danish testing center Østerild produced 216,000 kWh over 24 hours, and this has prompted the manufacturer to relaunch the turbine as a 9 MW turbine – despite the fact that it was constructed on the 8 MW platform.
