Hitachi drops plans for UK nuclear power plant

The UK has seen almost 7 gigawatts of nuclear capacity mothballed in the last few months, now that the Japanese conglomerate suspends planned construction of Wylfra Newydd and instead swallows an impairment of EUR 2.4 billion.

Political uncertainty comes in abundant supply in the UK. That applies not least of all to the question of the country's future energy policy. The UK's woes just became compounded with Hitachi's announcement that it has decided to suspend development of the 2.7 GW nuclear power plant, Wylfa Newydd, located in Wales.
