Swedish voters thwart utility privatization

A municipal majority has now voted to cancel the privatization of Swedish utility Öresundskraft following a massive slap from voters, only 3 percent of which supported a sale.

The sale of Southern Sweden's municipally owned utility Öresundskraft to pension fund AMF will not become a reality after all. The two center-right parties that hold a majority in the Municipality of Helsingborg inform in a statement Monday that they will not pursue the sale any further. The change of plans followed a local referendum held Sunday which left no doubt about the electorate's degree of support: 54,501 people voted against, while only 1,889 – corresponding to a mere 3.34 percent – voted in favor.
