Supplier Verdo Energy Systems has entered into a partnership with Kvitebjørn Varme in Tromsø on construction of a new waste-fired boiler installation, which will ensure additional district heating and simultaneously eliminate surplus waste.
Verdo Energy Systems will also take on reconstruction efforts on two existing boiler plants to equip them for future carbon capture facilities.
According to Verdo Energy Systems, this marks the biggest assignment yet in terms of capacity and order sum.
Each of the two existing installations has capacity of 10MW, while the new boiler facility will have capacity of 15MW. The aim of the expansion is to accommodate the growing population in Tromsø, which needs not just additional heating, but also produces more waste, which cannot be disposed of in any other manner.
”The boiler will fire what we call refuse-derived fuel. Meaning the waste that is left over after going through the sorting plant. Instead of sending it away, we will reuse the fuel resource locally in Tromsø,” says Sales Director at Verdo Energy Systems Bo Johansen.
Reconstruction of the existing facilities will finish in the summer of 2023, while the new facility will be completed at the end of 2024. Kvitebjørn Varme will be able to operate the facilities during both the construction and reconstruction phases.
