On Wednesday, the US federal authorities granted final approval for Ørsted’s Ocean Wind 1 offshore wind project off Atlantic City, New Jersey, according to a press release from the Bureau of Ocean Management of the US Department of the Interior.

Ocean Wind 1, which is planned to have a capacity of 1.1 gigawatts (GW) with up to 78 wind turbines and three substations, still needs the blue stamp of approval from the US Army Corps of Engineers, the National Marine Fisheries Services and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Wednesday’s approval is the third time the US government under President Biden has approved a major offshore wind project. Previously, Vineyard Wind, owned by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and others, in Massachusetts and South Fork Wind in Rhode Island have also received final approval.

”Since Day One, the Biden-Harris administration has worked to jump-start the offshore wind industry across the country – and today’s approval for the Ocean Wind 1 project is another milestone in our efforts to create good-paying union jobs while combatting climate change and powering our nation,” says Deb Haaland, US Secretary of the Interior, in a press release.

Ørsted bought out its partner, Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG), in January and is now the sole owner of Ocean Winds 1, which will be the first offshore wind farm in New Jersey.
