Energinet: Viking Link may not reach full capacity until 2025

It is unlikely that the connection will be running at full power before the first quarter of next year, Energinet tells Montel.

The Danish-British power connection Viking Link will nut run at full capacity any time soon, reports Montel

”Unfortunately, we will probably have to wait another year before we reach 1.4GW,” says Jeppe Hedegaard Munck, senior economist at Energinet.

The interconnector has been in operation since December 29 last year, but is challenged by the fact that the existing grid risks overloading if the full capacity of 1,400MW is released. Therefore, the connection is currently limited to 800MW for export and import of power.

The reason is that an otherwise planned expansion of the West Jutland grid is not complete and is not expected to be completed until 2025.

However, in mid-January, Energinet announced that it had initiated new measures to ensure that up to 1,400MW can be released in certain market and operational situations without risking system and supply security in Western Denmark.

The capacity will not be permanently increased to more than 800MW. However, during hours throughout the year when it makes sense, more than 800MW can be released to the market.
