Later this month, Tesla will start to export Model 3 sedans made in China to Europe. The cars are produced at a factory on the outskirts of Shanghai and will be shipped to countries in Europe, reports Bloomberg News based on an update from Tesla via Chinese app Wechat.

The units will be sent to nations including Germany, France and Switzerland. The EV-maker's Shanghai plant is the group's first outside the US and began to roll out models earlier this year.

"We hope to serve global customers as a global factory," Tesla’s manufacturing director of the Shanghai plant, Song Gang, told the US-based business media. "The export of China-built Tesla models is a key step in the global layout."

The Shanghai factory has played a role in Tesla's expansion into China and has an annual production capacity of 200,000 cars. Solely in September, 11,000 units were made at the site.

While in Germany last November, Tesla founder and Chief Executive Elon Musk said the group has plans to build both a factory as well as a design center near Berlin.
