EU's biofuel boost linked to Netherlands-sized deforestation

In a new report, European campaign group Transport & Environment links the clearing of 4 million hectares of forest in South Eastern Asia and South America with cultivation of soy and palm oil used to produce biofuel in the EU.

The EU's target for increasing the use of biofuels as part of the union's green ambitions has most likely led to deforestation of an area roughly the size of the Netherlands over the past ten years to clear land for soy and palm production, writes Reuters.
