Japanese electronics conglomerate Sony Group plans to launch a subsidiary, Sony Mobility, to focus on production of electric vehicles.
According to Nikkei Asia, the news was revealed at the consumer technology trade show CES 2022 in Las Vegas last week.
Sony revealed a prototype of a new electric SUV, Vision-S 02, which is to succeed the Vision-2 01 sedan presented at last year's fully virtual CES show.
According to Sony Chairman, President and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida, the preliminary excitement generated after the presentation of the Vision S was the trigger for Sony's entry into mobility through creativity and technology.
The operating company will be set up in the spring with the aim of accelerating the plans involved in exploring a commercial launch of Sony's electric vehicles.
The Sony Vision-S 01 is equipped with two 200kW electric engines and level-two autonomous driving systems.
The EV platform has been developed by the Austrian automaker Magna Steyr, while German Bosch is among the suppliers for the production.
