Serving as both chief executive officer and chairman of the board of directors of one of the world’s largest oil and gas companies comes with an above-average pay check.

Patrick Pouyanné, who holds both positions at French TotalEnergies, is able to bag a pay package of EUR 3.9m. Around EUR 2.5m of the total sum consists of bonuses.

The CEO thus pocketed 20 percent more in 2021 than in the year before. Over the years, the global oil and gas market took a sharp turn for the better after being marred by the coronapandemic and the oil price crisis in the spring of 2020.

The crisis led TotalEnergies to lower Pouyanné’s fixed annual salary by 25 percent in 2020, one of several cost-cutting measures.

TotalEnergies booked earnings of USD 16bn in 2021.
